WooCommerce vs Shopify in Bulgaria

Shopify is easier to start. WooCommerce gives you more control and costs less at scale. For Bulgarian merchants, there are a few specifics that tip the balance.

Choosing an e-commerce platform is one of those decisions that's easy to get wrong and hard to undo. Migrate a 5,000-product WooCommerce store to Shopify (or vice versa) and you're looking at weeks of work, SEO disruption, and new integrations to rebuild. It's worth spending an hour getting this right before you start.

This comparison is specifically for Bulgarian merchants — because ePay, Speedy, Econt, and Bulgarian VAT rules change the picture meaningfully compared to generic WooCommerce vs. Shopify comparisons you'll find on international blogs.

The Fundamental Difference

WooCommerce is a free, open-source plugin for WordPress. You host it yourself (or pay a host to do so), and you own the software completely. There are no platform fees beyond your hosting costs, and you can customise anything at the code level.

Shopify is a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform. You pay a monthly subscription (starting at around €30/month in the EU, scaling to €100+ for advanced plans), and Shopify hosts everything. You don't touch servers or databases. The trade-off is that you're operating within Shopify's constraints — you can only do what the platform allows or what apps in their marketplace support.

Cost Comparison for Bulgarian Merchants

The cost picture changes significantly at different scales:

  • Small store (under 100 products, low traffic): Shopify Basic at ~€30/month is competitive. WooCommerce hosting at this scale runs €5–20/month but requires more setup time.
  • Mid-size store (100–5,000 products): WooCommerce becomes significantly cheaper. Shopify's transaction fees (0.5–2% if you use a non-Shopify payment gateway) compound quickly. WooCommerce has no transaction fees.
  • Large store (5,000+ products): WooCommerce almost always wins on total cost of ownership. Shopify Advanced at €400+/month plus transaction fees versus €50–150/month for WooCommerce hosting.

There's an important nuance: WooCommerce's lower platform cost is offset by developer costs when something breaks or needs customisation. If you have no technical support, that €0 platform fee can become expensive quickly.

Bulgarian Payment Gateways

This is where the comparison gets locally specific. Most Bulgarian online shoppers expect to pay via ePay.bg, and many expect cash-on-delivery through Speedy or Econt.

WooCommerce has established integrations with ePay, Speedy, and Econt, maintained by Bulgarian developers and agencies. These work reliably and are widely used in production.

Shopify's Bulgarian ecosystem is thinner. ePay integration exists via third-party apps in the Shopify App Store, but these have fewer reviews, are maintained by smaller teams, and can be discontinued. Speedy and Econt integrations exist but are less polished than their WooCommerce counterparts. If Bulgarian payment and shipping integrations are important to your business (and for most local merchants, they are), WooCommerce has a meaningful advantage.

Shopify's Real Strengths

None of this is to say Shopify is the wrong choice. There are situations where it genuinely wins:

  • You're selling internationally and want a single platform that handles multi-currency, multi-language, and tax rules across markets out of the box.
  • You have no technical team and need a platform that updates itself, handles security, and doesn't require maintenance.
  • You need to launch fast — Shopify can have a basic store live in days, while a properly configured WooCommerce store takes weeks to build right.
  • Your product catalogue is small and your primary market is outside Bulgaria (UK, Germany, US), where ePay is irrelevant.
  • You're a direct-to-consumer brand that primarily sells through Shopify's native checkout and Meta/Google shopping integrations.

WooCommerce's Real Strengths

  • No transaction fees, which matters significantly at volume.
  • Full code ownership — you can customise anything, integrate anything, and take the codebase with you.
  • Mature Bulgarian ecosystem: ePay, Speedy, Econt integrations that actually work.
  • Better for complex product configurations, pricing rules, and B2B requirements.
  • Your store is portable — host anywhere, migrate without losing data to a platform.
  • WordPress's content capabilities mean SEO and blogging are first-class, not afterthoughts.

SEO: Does the Platform Matter?

Both platforms can rank well, but WooCommerce (on WordPress) is generally considered the stronger SEO platform. WordPress has better control over URL structure, canonical tags, schema markup, and page speed optimisation. Shopify has improved significantly but still has quirks — notably its URL structure forces /collections/ and /products/ prefixes and limits flexibility on pagination.

For a Bulgarian merchant targeting local keywords, the SEO difference is meaningful: content marketing on WordPress is genuinely easier than on Shopify. If you plan to write blog posts and guides to attract organic traffic (which you should), WooCommerce gives you better tools.

The Custom Option

For businesses with unusual requirements — multiple warehouses, complex B2B pricing, subscription products, or deep ERP integration — neither WooCommerce nor Shopify may be the right answer. A custom-built storefront on a headless architecture (Next.js frontend, custom API layer) gives complete flexibility at the cost of significantly higher development investment. This is typically a €20,000+ project and makes sense for businesses doing €1M+ in online revenue.

Our Recommendation

For most Bulgarian businesses building their first or second online store: start with WooCommerce. The Bulgarian payment and shipping ecosystem is better, you avoid ongoing transaction fees, and you own your platform. The initial build takes longer, but you're on a foundation that scales.

Choose Shopify if: you're launching internationally from day one, you have no technical support whatsoever and need a truly hands-off platform, or your products are simple and your market is primarily non-Bulgarian.

At Ascend, we build both. We'll tell you honestly which is right for your specific situation before any project starts.
